Uniontown is a small town in Butler County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Scranton–Wilkes-Barre, PA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Uniontown name comes from the fact that it was once a part of the United Kingdom. The town was founded in 1792 by Loyalist refugees from British America who had fled to what is now Pennsylvania during the American Revolution. Uniontown became a town on July 4, 1803, when it joined the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania as part of a larger land grant to 9 towns in Butler County. In 1825, Uniontown became one of ten towns in Butler County to become part of the new state of West Virginia; however, it returned to Butler County on January 17, 1861 following the US Civil War. Uniontown was once a small agricultural community located in the western part of Pennsylvania. It began to grow significantly after the Uniontown Manufacturing Company was founded in 1829. In addition, the town developed a strong social culture because of its close-knit relationships between residents. The town experienced significant growth during the late 19th century due to numerous factors including increased trade with eastern markets, new transportation routes and improvements made to the local road system. Additionally, Uniontown boasted an impressive cultural landscape that included several large Protestant churches and a number of Fine Arts galleries. Despite these successes, however, Uniontown eventually lost its status as a major center of commerce and culture during the first half of the 20th century. This change can be traced back to two main factors: 1) growing competition from larger towns in central Pennsylvania and 2) changes in American society that caused fewer people to move to Uniontown for work or education opportunities. These changes have had a significant impact on future generations who are likely to experience less economic stability than their predecessors did during this time period.
Uniontown was founded in 1795 by the merger of two towns, Unionville and West Union. The name originated from the union of three chiefdoms: Upper Canada, Lower Canada, and New York. The first settler in Uniontown was John Penn who arrived in 1795. He built a log cabin on the present site of the town. The area now known as Uniontown was part of Pennsylvania Colony until 1781 when it became part of Virginia Colony. In 1814, General Andrew Jackson moved his army through Uniontown to attack Mobile Bay. Uniontown supported Jackson and lost many people in the battle which ended with Jackson’s victory over Mobile Bay. After the Battle of New Orleans, General Winfield Scott established himself at Fort Donelson in nearby Holmdel Township and ordered Major James Horseshoe to build a stockade around the fort to protect settlers from Native Americans who were raiding their settlements. Horseshoe built a tall wooden fence around Fort Donelson which is still standing today. After weeks of construction, he started to move goods inside the fort for storage but soon realized that there wasn't enough room for all his supplies so he decided to abandon Fort Donelson and return home. After leaving Fort Donelson, Horseshoe met another man named John Armstrong who told him about a place called “The Alamo” where soldiers could sell their food after they had fought against Mexican forces during the Mexican-American War.
