The area now comprising Uniontown was first settled by French colonists in 1755 and named for George Washington. It became part of the United States of America in 1776. After the American Revolution, Uniontown was a center for Tory sympathizers and anti-Federalist sentiment led to its loss of status as an important early manufacturing center. However, it regained some prominence after World War II as a major military installation and later experienced growth as a bedroom community for workers in nearby Pittsburgh. In recent years, Uniontown has made strides to become more self-sufficient, with development of new businesses and initiatives such as a bioscience campus making it one of the most promising places to live in southwestern Pennsylvania.
