By 1875, over 60 percent of all bricks made in Fayette County were produced here (the industry peaked around 1920). During World War II, many soldiers who served in Europe garrisoned at Camp Butler near Uniontown while they awaited embarkation back home. Today, much of what once constituted the traditional center of town has been demolished or replaced by high-rise apartment buildings and other developments since laissez faire capitalism took hold during the early 20th century; however, some original businesses still operate today including Main Street Pharmacy which has been operating since 1835 and also provides groceries for several blocks around downtown; The Grist Mill which operated from 1800 until 1865; Mrs Okamoto's Bakery which opened its doors on October 25th 1909; Japandroids Japanese restaurant which opened December 1st 1984; and Mr & Mrs Plummer's barber shop which operates until 10pm every night (although this business closed down circa 2009).

Uniontown is a small town in Lackawanna County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 1,959 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Scranton–Wilkes-Barre, PA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers in Uniontown were two families from Lancaster County who came to the area in 1784. In 1825, William Fenton erected the first sawmill in Uniontown and also built a grist mill and store on the current site of Eastern State Bank. John Crouse founded a blacksmith shop in 1839 and startedivery services for local farmers. A post office was established at Uniontown in 1847 and remained operational until 1971. In 1865, James Bogue installed an electric power system to light up the town during night time while residents still used horses for transportation around town. In 1870, John Hennessee opened a general store which became known as "The Shop". By 1880 there were four storeslots and twelve businesses operating in Uniontown with a population of 3,500 people. The Panic of 1893 wreaked havoc on local businesses which forced many entrepreneurs to leave town or close their doors for lack of business opportunities. Uniontown experienced significant growth after World War II when manufacturing jobs increased due to new technologies such as plastics production and aluminum smelting facilities being developed throughout western Pennsylvania; however bypassing Scranton/Wilkes-Barre led to some loss of jobs that could have been absorbed into nearby municipalities had they not closed their borders against intra-city migration during that time period (the Steelworkers Local 990 closed its plant south side of Wilkes Barre Township). It wasn't until 1994 when Bethlehem Steel pulled out all its workers from its three plants located within one mile (1 kilometer) of each other - including 350 steelworkers working at two different plants adjacent to each other - leading to what has been called "the largest industrial community closings ever seen" within Lackawanna County; however since then many new businesses have opened up in Uniontown catering more towards retirees than younguns looking for factory work like during those yearsnedy days past
