Uniontown is located in the Lehigh Valley, a region of northeast Pennsylvania that has long been an agricultural center. The town was founded in 1784 by colonists from New York and was named for General George Washington. Ammunition manufacture began in Uniontown in 1822 and continued until the early 21st century. The first ammunition factory in Uniontown was built by Nicholas Biddle, a contractor who had arrived in the area to help build the Susquehanna Canal. Biddle’s factory produced rifle rounds, pistols, artillery shells, and other munitions during the late 19th century. In 1892, Uniontown’s arsenal became one of the largest in North America when it purchased two cannons from London-based firm Henry Rifle & Gunpowder Company. The arsenal continued to produce munitions throughout World War I and World War II; during those years it also manufactured machineguns and artillery ammunition. In recent decades, gunsmithing has become a more popular hobby among residents of Uniontown; as ammo production ceased there have been few opportunities for local entrepreneurs to set up shop making firearms products. That said, some gunsmiths continue to operate out of small businesses within the town limits (e.g., Black Hills Armory). Despite this lack of commercial activity, many residents maintain active connections with their hometown Arsenal through social media (e.g., Facebook) and word-of-mouth discussion meetings held each year around Independence Day celebrations or Fourth of July fireworks displays.

During World War II, many of the buildings that now make up the downtown district were used as a munitions plant; however, today most of these structures are either unused or undergoing renovation. One particular building that still stands from wartime use is Piggly Wiggly hamburger stand which opened in 1945 inside what is now Granny Smith's grocery store (now closed).

Ammunition is also used recreationally by shooters all across the world who enjoy using various rounds for target practice or shooting off shotguns!

Today, Uniontown is an important cultural destination for residents from all over Pennsylvania because of its rich history and vibrant community atmosphere.
