It is part of the Philadelphia–Wilmington–Camden metropolitan area. State College was founded on February 14, 1777 as a small log cabin community by George Washington and his men during their invasion of British America. The college town name origins from an early Germanic word meaning "streets of pasture." The first Class of students at the new School for Boys were graduated in May 1778 from a program begun in 1775 by James Robertson and others to provide education for poor boys west of Philadelphia. On January 26th, 1836, StateCollege became coeducational when it became a unit of the University of Pennsylvania; however it reverted to male-only instruction in 1871 due to financial reasons following construction of the new University campus east of town. In 1876-77 an attempt was made to raise money for statehood through land sales but no success was achieved. In 1928 StateCollege successfully petitioned for designation as oneida school district No 710 within the newly formed Commonwealth school system due to its location near Reading and Chestnut Hill among other places which had been designated as campuses for larger academic institutions outside the original boundaries set forth by Act 625 Of Pamphlet III Of 1830 - creating both statewide educational opportunities while also opening up much rural territory hitherto unattainable through open enrollment legislation then or since! In 1941-1942 StateCollege experienced some tragic events with over 100 student fatalities resulting from air raids on three days during World War II including what would be later known as “The Nightingale bombing” that destroyed several homes and killed nine people including President Franklin D Roosevelt’s maternal grandfather; this event would serve as motivation for enactment of Executive Order 9066 which directed all universities and colleges nationwide not to participate in any military activities without first obtaining prior approval from higher authorities! In recent years many major renovations have taken place such as the replacement/upgrade/renovation/replacement or addition (depending on your perspective)of over 50 buildings making it one of most rapidly growing municipalities in Lehigh County with present day plans calling for even more growth!!
