State College, Pennsylvania (SC) is a small town in the Susquehanna Valley of eastern Pennsylvania. The population was 38,906 at the 2010 census, making it the third-most populous municipality in Susquehanna County. It is part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. The first settlers to this area were farmers who came from Eastern York County and Pennsylvania in 1795. They named their new town State College after George Washington's inauguration as president on April 15, 1797. At that time, there was only one other village in Susquehanna County and its residents numbered about fifty. Governor John Bradford built a courthouse and jail here in 1802 when he became governor of Pennsylvania following the death of James Ketchum. The citizens of State College petitioned for statehood in 1827; they were denied because they did not meet certain requirements including having a normal school or college degree. However, they obtained unanimous approval to become a city on July 1, 1830 under Mayor James Weisbrod's leadership with a population of just over 710 people. In 1840, when violence erupted between rival groups living off Indian land north of SC and those living on east side farms south of SC boundary line – known as "The Robe Rebellion" – Captain Edward Robinson took command of militia forces loyal to William Pitts effective January 8th 1841 to quash any potential uprising or conflict within township boundaries without bloodshed or damage done to either party by others inhabiting those same boundaries In doing so he assumedcommand over an entire township army numbering nearly two hundred men believed at that time to have been effectively fielded from all over southeastern PA including Monroeville Township That single act forever changedSC community & society
