State College, Pennsylvania is a small town in the United States state of Pennsylvania. The population was 5,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. In 1784, John Dickinson, one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence, founded State College and named it after himself. Pennsylvanians voted on May 10th, 1785 to create a college adjacent to what is now Scranton with £5 sterling per capita as its first capital fund. The cornerstone for this building was laid on November 7th, 1802 by George Washington and construction began in 1803 under direction of Governor John Armstrong McDowell. The college's first president was James Craighead who served from 1814-1828 and then again from 1830-1836; he was succeeded by his son Drury Craighead. In 1850 State College became an all-male institution when it became affiliated with Brown University; however Brown soon dropped affiliation because State College had no agricultural program comparable to that of Brown's agriculture school. In 1863 Wyoming Agricultural and Mechanical Business Institution moved into new buildings on North Murray Avenue in State College proper (today's Old Main). That same year also saw the opening of its first course: engineering science with a focus on transportation issues due to increasing tensions between Unionists and Confederates over slavery in America. Classes were held in two rooms off Beaver Street until 1870 when a newbuilding (the old Administration Building) was erected on Northumberland Road near campus for use as classrooms, laboratories and an auditorium/hallway (later used as Wright Hall). In 1876–77 StateCollege formed a student government which later became known as "The Alma Mater". On September 20th 1907 violence broke out during rush hour at StateCollege when students demonstrating against low tuition rates set off an open riot that spread across campus before being quelled by police using tear gas and firearms while some students ran away immeasurably injured or dead; several buildings including Old Main were destroyed in the process including President James Craighead's home which remain standing today albeit reduced to frame only remains.. Classes recommenced four days later but were suspended due to lack of faculty available due to World War I hostilities outside the United StatesArmy’s Zone Of Control.. In 1922–23 both men’s dormitories burned down causing $100K damage – this event marked one example where riots occurred during college proceedings rather than academic sessions leading some students flying into rage upon their return .. On October 15th 1931 classes resumed following a three day vacation after Thanksgiving Day holiday.. However due largelyto Prohibition laws making alcohol illegal within STATE COLLEGE'S borders Beer could still be consumed oncampus but not sold .. On December 12th 1938 Gov Cleveland signed Executive Order 9346 authorizing NCAA basketball games played at Scranton Municipal Stadium insteadat Alumni Gymnasium.. This event marked PRISMACULTURE'S FIRST INTERNATIONAL EVENT OTHER THAN A GAMESEASON BASKETBALL GAME AND FIRST TIME THAT SPORTS WERE PLAYED IN THE AREA OF STATE COLLEGE’S CAMPUSES .. From 1945 until 1998 there was only football offered at StateCollege followed by Men’s Golf in 1979 On July 1st 1959 additional landaddition called North Campus opened with 3 acres giving rise to what is now Student Recreation Center(SRC) . Also that year Women’s Studies classes were added along with German Language & culture courses which led eventuallyto Women’s Studies major programs being offered concurrently with Men’s Studies startingin 1976 As recently as Fall 2009 there were plans for developing a new stadium adjacent to North Campus which would have allowed Holy Cross Eagles football team play their home games there future stadium plans are currently status quo pending funding
