After being named for George Washington's home state of Virginia (where he served as an officer in the British army), the college moved to Philadelphia in 1802. In 1814, with the creation of Pennsylvania as a United States state, State College became part of Philadelphia County. In 1828, State College moved to its present location on what is now University Avenue in central State College. At that time it had nine buildings - three brick structures and six frame buildings - but has since grown to more than seventy-five buildings including twenty-one on University Avenue alone. StateCollege has been consistently ranked among America's " Top Colleges" for both academic achievement and student satisfaction since 1978. It has also been selected as one ofAmerica's " Top 100 Universities" twice consecutively (1983-1987).
