In 1754, the first state capitol was built on the site of what is now State College. The Capitol building and grounds were used until 1847 when the Pennsylvania General Assembly moved to Harrisburg. On October 20, 1847, the first general election in Pennsylvania was held at State College and the results showed that George Washington had won an overwhelming victory over John Adams.
