The physical development of StateCollege began with timbering operations around 1800-1801 when farmers from Carbon County started harvesting trees near present day Second Street and North High Street. By 1830, there were sawmills operating on North High Street and West Main Avenue as well as four rope works along South Frontage Road (later East Frontage Road). In 1833, a canal was constructed through central Huntingdon County connecting Beaver Dam Creek with Clearwater River via Third Avenue and North High Street. This new infrastructure allowed for more farming activity and made it easier for goods to be transported between Beaver Dam Creek and Clearwater River settlements throughout Central Pennsylvania including StateCollege. Industry continued to grow in this area due to advances in transportation technology such as steamboats which made shipping goods much easier than ever before during the late 19th century & early 20th century
