St. Marys, Pennsylvania is a small town in the Susquehanna Valley of Pennsylvania in the United States. Originally part of Westmoreland County, it was moved to Butler Township in 1853 and then to Stroudsburg Township in 1907. The population was 2,723 at the 2000 census. The town has one high school, Stroudsburg Area High School; two elementary schools, Churchville Elementary School and New Beginnings Elementary School; and one junior/senior high school, South Side Junior-Senior High School. There are also three churches in town - First Presbyterian Church (built 1792), Second Presbyterian Church (built 1819), and Holy Cross Catholic Parish (founded 1865). One of the most famous residents of Stroudsburg was General George Washington who spent his winters here from 1777 until 1781 when he moved to Mount Vernon. He is buried at nearby Georgetown Cemetery. Other notable figures associated with the community include Moses Jerome Sennett (1822-1900), a physician and philanthropist who helped found South Side Junior-Senior High School; writer John Dos Passos (1895-1968); artist Edward Hopper (1902-1978); entrepreneur Andrew Carnegie (1845-1935); and basketball coach Rick Majerus (1966-.).
St. Marys was founded in 1751 by Captain John Fetterman, who named it for his wife, Saint Mary of the Assumption. The first settler in what is now St.Marys Township was Nicholas Kappel, who arrived in 1771. The township was organized on December 5, 1837, under the jurisdiction of Allegheny County. On February 18, 1850, it became part of the newly created Washington County and on November 3, 1868 it joined Beaver County. On January 1, 1925, St.Marys Township re-organized within Washington County as a separate municipality with its own government and mayor/council under the same rules and procedures as those used in Beaver County until that date. In 1932 two small villages were annexed to St.Marys Township: Whitehall and Parkville (now called Mount Pleasant). These annexations were due to concern over population growth within the limits of both municipalities without corresponding growth in services or other basic needs such as transportation or infrastructure available to either village center which made annexation an attractive proposition to residents and officials alike. In 1936 a new bypass road was built between Whitehall and Parkville through what is now known as Hellickson Woods Nature Preserve making transportation more easily accessible for all residents of both villages while still maintaining open access to hunting and fishing opportunities found near each village center
