The Village Hall which stands today at 12th Street and Market Place in downtown also remains from those days as did many other local businesses including two grocery stores (Grocery Mart #1 & GroceryMart #2) as well as several tanneries (Baldwin's Tanneries & Joe's Leatherworks). As mentioned earlier, many residents from rural areas worked their way up through politics or business opportunities in Philadelphia or Baltimore during the 19th century before moving to larger towns or villages in Bucks County or Lehigh Valley during the 20th century. Many families who lived in downtown St.Marys continue to do so today; for example: The Gershwins live on Market Place since 1959 while Mrs. John Gershwin continues to perform music here regularly; The Sullivans have been living on Eighth Street since 1922 while their daughter Patti continued her dancing career here until her death in 2009; Finally, many other families have moved out into more suburban areas over the years such as Mr./Mrs.(last name unknown) who has resided on Walnut Street for over fifty years now; alluding back to an even older history that goes back much further than these examples could possibly illustrate!
In 1784, a group of people from St. Marys founded the parish of Allentown. They named it in honor of Blessed Virgin Mary, who had been their patron saint since before their founding. The first pastor inAllentown was Father John Costanza. In 1829, the parish acquired its own church, which served as the center for religious services until 1949 when a new building was erected on Market Street in downtown Allentown. In 1957, the Parish purchased an old schoolhouse on Elmwood Avenue and dedicated it as the Parish Hall. The Parish continued to use this building until 1993 when they moved into their current facility on Sixty-fourth Street in front of the Allentown High School.
