The cornerstone for the church was laid on October 25, 1830 by Bishop Reuben Clark of Philadelphia during his visit to Lackawanna County. A new brick church was completed in 1835 and dedicated by Bishop Abraham Lincoln of Baltimore Harbor. In 1848, following Italian American immigration to America and their desire for religious affiliation with an Italian congregation outside their homeland, five families pooled resources and purchased 6 tracts of land including present-day St. Marys from Nicholas Weingarten (a Dutch immigrant). Named after their patron saint—the virgin mother—the Saints ran a convent/chapel service here until 1898 when they sold it all to Tuskegee University for use as a research center and dormitory complex known as “The Academy” (now Tuskegee University Institute). After World War II ended and white America regained its social order through legislation such as Social Security and Medicare that benefited majority black Americans living within white society—and not just those who resided within Anglo-Saxon Protestant societies such as Germany or England where benefits were available only to those who could afford it—St. Marys quickly reverted back into an agricultural community full of farmers under one roof again serving primarily white rural residents until recent times when some businesses have opened up here making it more diversely populated but still largely serving mainly people from rural areas outside Scranton metropolitan area since industrialization began expanding beyond Appalachia into central PA creating greater demand for goods produced there while also reducing manufacturing jobs in these regions creating what has been called “ Skill Drain” effect where people leaving these industries are replaced by substitutes without any skill sets or experience necessary which has led many companies located outside Scranton metro area like Allstate Insurance Company to move some operations there because they can no longer find employeeshere locally with similar qualifications despite offers from other metro areas
