St. Marys, Pennsylvania is a small town located in the northernmost corner of Luzerne County, Pennsylvania. The population was 2,994 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area and is bordered by Uniontown to the north, Wilkes-Barre to the east, Slippery Rock to the south and Westmoreland County to the west. St. Marys was founded in 1796 by Father John Justus O’Malley as a small Catholic chapel on land that had been donated by George Washington. In 1812, Father Abraham Lincoln sent two priests from Philadelphia to build an addition for St. Marys on what was then rural land near present-day Monroeville Township and Northmont Borough in Westmoreland County. Pope Pius IX designated St.Marys as a parish in 1836 and construction began on a church which would serve both local residents and those living beyond its boundaries; this first church was dedicated on October 14, 1836. As enrollment grew at St.Marys Parish Hall (now known as Parish House), it became necessary to add additional floors to accommodate growth – these were completed in 1840 including an attic for worshipers who could not fit into the main building basement due to its narrowness (a feature still extant today). In 1855–1857, work commenced on enlarging and beautifying Lady Street between Market Street and Butler Avenue which formed what is now called Bishop Plaza across from Lady Street United Methodist Church – this project increased traffic flow through Station Square where commercial activity took place during lunchtime until about 1907 when schools moved into new buildings nearby making St..Marys “a ghost town” according to one account; however another account claimed that although no businesses still operate at Bishop Plaza today there are occasional visits from enthusiasts who find old Masonic devices lying around or enterprising developers have constructed limited but successful restaurants inside since restoration efforts ended in 1984! The popularity of baseball led many families living around Allegheny River close enough so their children could watch games from home while adults worked; consequently some storefront windows continuing up through 1951 were boarded up because they could not be replaced with shingles after repeated water damage! A few dwellings remain standing along Old Main Road but most have been replaced by more recent structures such as churches or apartments - all except one may be demolished within 10 years due primarilyto demolition permits available from borough planning commissioners! In 1957–1958 permission was granted for extensive excavation beneath Lady Street leading eventually towards what is now Northumberland Park with associated shopping malls being built adjacent including One Financial Center (later HSBC) just outside of town limits today - St..Marys once again experienced reduced population growth with only about 100 people residing within its borders prior to 1990 when births outpaced deaths through natural increase causing population growth above 1,000 for only three relatively short periods before reaching 1,521 at present!
