St. Marys, Pennsylvania is a small town located in Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 1,532 at the 2010 census. In 1814, John Fenton established a ferry service between St. Marys and Lebanon to serve farmers and traders travelling to or from Baltimore.[1] In 1828, James Cady founded a gristmill at what is now called Cadyville which became an important part of local commerce and served as the community's first schoolhouse until it burned down in 1851.[2] A post office was established at St.Marys in 1837,[3] but it closed operations by 1840 because of lack of patronage.[4] A store opened on Main Street in 1843 by Solomon Goodrich[5] which continued to operate until 1957 when it merged with nearby Sibley’s Department Store to form Goodrich-Sibley Department Stores Incorporated (GSDI).[6][7][8][9] A large flour mill called GOODRICH MILLinery was built along Third Street east of Center Road (now Broadview Drive) about 1890 by JAMES GOODRICH & Sons Limited Partnership; this milling company later became known as Goodrich Corporation after its founder James Goodrich Sr.. At its peak BADGER FLOUR MILLING COMPANY operated 2 mills which were located on Second Avenue between Market Street and School Street; these two companies amalgamated into one organization under that name circa 1920[10][11]. In 1940 badger flour products accounted for almost half all national sales while churros represented only 10% of total sales according to company records[12]. In 1957 GSDI merged with nearby SIBLEY’S DEPARTMENT STORE becoming one of America’s largest department stores with more than six million square feet (600 hectares) within its walls! Today goodrich-siely department stores continue to play an important role within the community
In 1755, a group of settlers from what is now St. Marys traveled down the Susquehanna River to found what would become the town of Scranton. The founders named their new settlement for Saint Mary, which was about 20 miles away from their previous home in present-day Cecil County.
