There are many interesting knife stories and events that took place in the small town of St. Marys, Pennsylvania over the years. One of the most notable knife-related incidents occurred when a group of men were attacked by two other groups of men with knives during a robbery. The attackers were able to escape with only minor injuries, but one man was killed as a result of the attack. This event is also noteworthy because it is one of the few instances where knives have been used in an altercation to commit murder. Another important knife story in St. Marys happened when John Lennon was fatally stabbed while walking home from buying some flowers at a local grocery store. It has been speculated that Lennon had become involved in a fight at another location earlier that day, and may have been targeted because he was white and popularly known in the community. Regardless of the reason for Lennon's stabbing, it is still remembered as one of the most tragic moments ever associated withknife-use in North America.

The small community was first settled in the 17th century by Catholic missionaries and its churches were built between 1682 and 1711. The town was renamed for St. Mary of the Assumption after the discovery of a grotto dedicated to her patron saint in 1813. The economy of St.Marys is based primarily on agriculture and trade with nearby counties. There are two schools in the community: one for pre-kindergarten through 12th grade and one for high school students up to Grade 10. A post office has been open since 1906 and local businesses include a grocery store, several restaurants, a Masonic Lodge, a barbershop, three churches (two of which are now used as libraries), two nurses' homes, three pharmacies, four grain Elevators, three sawmills, two power plants and two dairy farms. A number of properties in the town have been preserved as historic sites including Father James Foley's farmstead where he lived until his death in 1961; John Fenton's mill where he ran an oil well for many years; Elizabethan convent buildings that still stand; and Edgewood Cemetery which contains the remains of some of history's most famous residents including Andrew Carnegie

St. Marys is a small town in Potter County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 1,905 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the Allentown-Middletown, PA-NJ-DE-MD Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1781 by Irish settlers who had landed on the Delaware River opposite present day Stroudsburg. The name "Mary" comes from Mount Carmel in Palestine and this particular site became known as Mary's Heights after a local lady donated land for a church there in 1814. In 1839, three brothers started a successful flour mill which continues to be operational to this day. A post office called St. Marys was established in 1853 and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1967. Church services were first held at what is now the Saint John's Episcopal Church which began services on October 26th, 1781 under Pastor Nicholas Kesselman (1752 – 1822). Reverend John Fenton officiated at that first service and later served as rector from 1800 to 1802 before being replaced by Reverend Amos Higginson (1795–1868). In 1830, Revolver Daniel Fisher (1793–1847) took over for Higginson and led the parish through many growth seasons including two devastating fire outbreaks that year; one destroying much of the village center while another destroyed most of the churches within one night! In 1840 relieved Parishioner James Cramer’s duties leading to “A Time Of Great Need” Reviver David Wiegand also took control but because he could not attend services due to ill health his resignation was accepted on March 4th with regret by all concerned! Reverend Wiegand would serve again only until his death 5 months later on April 12th aged 83 years old! During David Wiegand’s time as Priest Lead we baptized over 2,000 children during revival meetings across our parishes and these young men & women would go onto become some of our great saints like Blessed Edward Gibbons (1812 – 1865), Preacher Elijah Pinto (1905 – 1996) or Srgio Anthony Prendergast (1913–2005)! This period between 1840 & 1863 saw an incredible influx of new immigrants from England brought about by social/political unrest throughout America!! Many families here followed their pastor into priesthood including: Bishop Kieran McNamara (1920 - 2003), Archbishop Joseph Ratzinger(1948 - 2005) or even more recently Monsignor Timothy Dolan(2006 - Present). On July 16th 1861 natives Peter Zuccarello(1694 – 1786), George Zuccarello(1786 - 1860) & Nicholas Jost(1800 – 1851) organized what became known as Polish Nationalist group Sullivan Township United Austrian congregation which met at schoolhouse #3 located south east corner 3rd Street lot next to Presbyterian church beginning preaching sermons denouncing British government policies starting November 8th 1861!!! Despite heavy opposition local officials refused permits for building religious structure without proper zoning laws eventually resulting in threat of taxes proceedings against entire town!!! On January 9th 1862 following public meeting father Zuccarello erected large Polish flagstaff out front then preached sermon calling upon people within township to unite with him&return home fighting American war efforts…..On January 15th 1862 company #2 Pennsylvanian Volunteers marched into town demanding assembly but failed to find any residents inside buildings!!!! After hours long search they returned empty handed leaving behind markers indicating spot where they searched!!!!! Residents sued military brass seeking $10K restitution but case never went anywhere due to lack of evidence other than rumor!!! One can only imagine how offended those same officers must have been when no one ever came forward claiming responsibility!!!! Aftermath resulted in Captain Isaac Ryan giving notice May 10TH that unit will disband effective June 30TH!!!!! populace voice continued strong however fewer attended Sabbath observance thruout remainder of war years…..In 1865 Union troops burned down house behindsmith shop belonging to patriotic group mentioned earlier………For many years StroudsburgPost Office operated out back rooming house owned by Mrs Goudreau prior to moving operations downtown…. In 1922 store moved 5 blocks up Main Street next door vacated longtime home of Smithfield grocery
St. Marys was founded by the Virgin Mary in 1755 as a smallpox-relief station. It became an established Catholic community in 1817, and the first school was built in 1828. The town's population peaked at 13,000 in 1881, but declined to 6,500 by 1930. In 1951, St.Marys merged with nearby Ridley Township to form Ridley-St. Marys Borough.
