This device allowed handguns to be fired with either hand with no interference from the barrel. Swiveling barrels became increasingly popular throughout World War II due to their ability to improve accuracy when firing at close range targets. After the end of World War II, however, interest in using firearms for target shooting began waning and swiveling barrels reverted back into obscurity. The following is a general history of St. Marys, Pennsylvania from the first settlements through to present day. In 1795, George Washington and his Federalists were elected as the first United States President, setting off what would be a long and tumultuous era in American history. In 1801, Congress passed the Missouri Compromise which divided the nation into slave and free states. The Free States of America had been founded by Americans who wanted independence from British rule. The slave states continued to exist under their own laws while the slave states that border free states formed a new Confederacy called the Union. On July 4th, 1861, Confederate General Robert E. Lee surrendered at Appomattox Court House in Virginia after four years of hard fighting against Ulysses S. Grant’s Union army. This event ended slavery in America but it did not end racial discrimination against black people or women; these issues would continue for many years to come. StMarys was founded on November 10th, 1795 by settlers named Priestly and Rankin with help from Presbyterian missionaries from Scotland (later known as Presbyterianism). The population of StMarys grew rapidly during its early days due to gold discoveries in nearby Montero County (now Westmoreland County). By 1800 there were over 200 residents living on land that now makes up portions of Pittsburgh and Allegheny County (now Beaver County). religious ceremonies were held at various sites around town before being moved to Holy Cross Church on Market Square in 1806-07 when it became an Episcopal parish led by Revd Dr John Rankin who also served as pastor until his death in 1827 Reverend John Rankin was followed by Revd Dr Edward Aiken who preached until his death in 1840; then Revd Dr James Cushing took over for him until he resigned due to health problems in 1848 . Growth continued during this time with more buildings being erected including a schoolhouse (1811), doctor’s office (1821), post office (1825), storeroom/chamberlain’s office(1838) and jail/prison built between 1830-35 .During this time two churches also sprang up: First Congregational Church on Fitzroy Street east of town built c1800-02 when someMethodist Methodists fled persecution back home; second Methodist church built west of town between 1800-03 & 1830-35 by Baptist preacher Elijah Howe which later became known as Allentown Cathedral . Census records show that population growth slowed during the mid 19th century while job opportunities dwindled because railroads came into operation making transportation much easier; however there are still remnants of early settlement including original homespun clothing shops along Market Square today In 1863 StMarys become part of Butler Township when Butler Township was organized out of parts of Lawrence County . By 1870 most residents within township had left for other areas such as Meadville or Conshohocken where industries began developing such as steel production or coal mining . However one small community remaining was founded nearinally called “StJohnstown” after Bishop Johnstown OFM whose Visitations started here about 1850 .. Population size decreased again during 20th century with few new arrivals since World War II ; however increasing interest has recently revived interest among those who live nearby .. Today there are over 400 residents residing within city limits both inside and outside the boundaries defined by 11 acres surrounding Market Square
In 1753, the first Catholic church in St. Marys was built on the site of an earlier Methodist chapel. The townspeople donated land to build the church and it was dedicated on October 3, 1753. The parishioners began using thechurch as their main place of worship until a new building could be erected. That building, which is now known as the Parish Hall, was completed in 1814 and served as the parish's headquarters until 1957 when a new rectory was built.
