Today, St. Marys is a small town located in Berks County, PA, about 20 miles northeast of Reading. The first Europeans to visit what is now St. Marys were French traders and explorers who traveled along the Delaware River in search of new lands to explore. In 1684, Jacques Marquette and his team explored the lower Susquehanna River and found it to be empty; this discovery led to the idea that there might be another route down the river to New York City! In 1802, John Stevens founded a trading post on present-day State Highway 421 near where today’s Main Street crosses the river. This trading post served as a staging ground for travelers heading eastward from Philadelphia or westward from Baltimore! The following year, Stevens erected a stone two-story building at what is now State Route 421 and named it “St.Marys” after his patron saint – Mama Teresa de Jesús (1524-1614). Over time, other people also came to live in what is now St. Marys; some rich families donated land for use as a school district while others started their own businesses! In 1916, St.Marys School District was formed and has continued serving communities within Berks County ever since! Today, much like when it first began its life as an Indian trading post, St.Marys continues to provide support for local businesses and residents! With over 100 students in grades PreK-12th grade (the K through 12th grade portion), we offer opportunities for students of all ages to learn about God’s plan for their lives! St. Marys was the first town in what is now Monroe County, Pennsylvania. The first settler in the area was John Pyne, who arrived in 1765. He built a cabin on the present-day site of St. Marys about a mile west ofpresent-day Monroeville. In 1812,Sylvester Cady and his brother James founded Carbon Township (now Carbon City) in what is now Monroe County,PA. In 1815, Justus Tiffany settled at Eastern Grove near present-day Carbondale and began to cultivate corn there. A year later, he erected a cabin thereon which he named eastern grove after his home town of Carbondale, Illinois.
