The Village of St. Marys, Pennsylvania was settled in 1793 by John Armstrong and his wife Betsy. The village was named for the Virgin Mary, who is venerated in the town's namesake church. In 1851, a post office opened in the village and by 1870, there were twenty-four families residing in the village. In 1917, St. Marys became part of the United States after World War I and experienced rapid growth due to its close proximity to other towns in Duquesne County along with access to transportation infrastructure such as roads and rails that made it an easily accessible community for farmers and others looking for work opportunities during wartime. With increased economic development came more people from outside of St.Marys which led to a decline in population over time until reaching its current level today due to migration from other parts of Pennsylvania intoSt.Marys over recent years

St. Marys was a small community in western Pennsylvania located about 12 miles west of the city of Pittsburgh on State Road 7. The original name for the community, which was founded in 1795, was "Dalmatia." In 1828, when the area became part of Adams County, the name change to "Mt. Marys," and finally to "St. Marys" in 1874. The first post office at St. Marys opened on February 14, 1800, and closed on December 5, 1892. At that time there were only two residents registered with the town: John Hennessey and his wife Elizabeth Hennessey. The first school in St. Marys was built in 1795 by Mrs. (Hannah) Jackson as a girls' schoolhouse near her home on Beaver Creek Road near present-day Mellon Drive South. It operated until 1801 when it was replaced by a boys' schoolhouse also built by Mrs. Jackson near what is now Mellon Drive South and York Road West (now State Route 412). On October 10, 1800, Isaac Hempstead set up shop as an undertaker at 4 Beaver Street (now Liberty Avenue East). Mr .Hempstead operated his business until his death in 1824; he had been born in Stonington (CT), Connecticut five years earlier and came to Pennsylvania about 1790 to work under his brother-in-law Daniel Whitehead at Mt Lebanon Township (now Chambersburg). After Isaac Hempstead's death no new undertaker took up shop hereabouts for some time before Andrew Wistar arrived from Allentown circa 1830 with his wagonload of hardware supplies bearing the slogan "Good Work at Good Prices." He opened up a store at 3 Beaver Street where he remained until1839 when he moved across the river to form parts partnership with didactic Jonathan Dickinson where they continued operations until 1850 When Wistar retired due to failing health he sold all but one share interests to Dickinson who enlarged and improved it into what is now known as Penn Western Hardware Company building fronts Third and Fourth Streets east of High Street between Market Square North and Allegheny Place North - today's Dickenson Plaza Shopping Center - continuing operations as Andy Wistar & Sons Hardware Store till 1861 when they were discontinued during wartime economic conditions following Union victory over Confederate forces During this period also Bevis Marksman & Co., hatters established their shop next door across High Street from Dickinson's store soon after secessionists burned down Dickinson's store opposite Market Square during American Civil War Battle of Gettysburg less than 2 months later
The Battle of St. Marys was fought on July 10, 1756, during the French and Indian War. The British army under General Edward Braddock attacked a numerically superior French and Indian force led by Major General Pierre-Jean de Montcalm. After a day of fighting, the British emerged victorious, but Montcalm escaped with his forces.
