The first ammunition was a type of buckshot which was created by combining lead shot with saltpetre. This combination caused excessive muzzle flash and made it difficult to aim accurately. In 1826, a man named John Barrett developed a new type of ammo which he called "Barrett's Ball." This ball consisted of small lead balls that were fired from a shotgun at high velocities. The increased accuracy and firepower this ammo brought to the community allowed for more than just sporting events to be held in town. By 1830, ammunition had become an important part of daily life in St. Marys as handguns became increasingly popular among residents. By 1840, rifle rounds had also been born into village life due to their effectiveness at range and their ability to kill larger game than handgun rounds could manage. Rifle rounds required separate charges that would be placed inside different barrels called "balls" or cases. These charges were then fired off together at designated distances, resulting in damage being inflicted on whatever was hit by each round. Rifle rounds continue to play an important role today as they are able to penetrate large targets much further than handgun rounds can do

In 1907, St. Marys approved annexation by Altoona which made it one of the most populous communities in Luzerne County. It has experienced growth since then with an increase in businesses and civic organizations including a library, fire department and high school (now called Altoona Area High School). The population reached 5,000 within ten years of being annexed into Altoona proper and has remained around that number ever since despite occasional smaller spikes due to migration or natural changes such as demographic shifts within localities or changes withinLuzerne County itself. The first Baptist church in St. Marys was built in 1775 by Reverend John Kline. It burned down in 1829, but a new Baptist church was built and dedicated in 1830. The current building was built in 1907.
