This factory produced weapons until 1971 when it was turned over to Winchester Ammunition Corporation who continue to produce firearms there today . The town of St. Marys was founded in 1753 by the Pennsylvanian settlers, who named it for the virgin martyrdom of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. The first school was built in 1755 and the first township was formed in 1756. In 1805, the town had a population of 350 people and it became a borough in 1834. In 1868, the borough merged with neighboring Huntingdon to form Huntingdon-St. Marys Borough. The borough was dissolved on December 15, 1975, and its assets were transferred to Huntingdon Township.
