In 1814, when American forces invaded Canada during the War of 1812, they burned Sharon to the ground and destroyed all traces of English colonialism. However, some members of the community rebuilt and continued to grow crops until 1860 when they were again annexed by Pennsylvania as part of the western borderlands become statehood. When these areas were added to new states during the mid-19th century – including Colorado – there was no corresponding change to their history or demographics as local residents continued to identify with their previous home town on the other side of county lines. In 1951, when Pennsylvanian Govanter James Monroe announced plans for a new statewide high school system within Lehigh County – then known as “the Preppy District” because so few students attended public schools in rural areas – villagers began canvassing their homes for potential sites for what would become Riverhill High School. By 1955, more than 60% of residents who responded said they wanted their school located near their homes; construction began onsite that year and Riverhill opened its doors on September 24th, 1956. Today, Sharon remains one Of Steelstown's most vibrant communities with an active shopping district anchored by larger stores along State Street and Route 309A
Sharon, Pennsylvania was founded in 1795 by the Potters. The town was named in honor of Mrs. Martha Pitcairn, who donated land to the town and also built a log cabin. The first settler in Sharon was David Potter, who arrived in 1796. In 1815, the population of Sharon reached 400 people. By 1850, the population had increased to 1,500 people and by 1870 it had grown to 3,000 people. In 1875, the town became a borough and in 1898 it became a city.
