This tactic proved successful and soon other militaries began to adopt it as well. The practice continued into World War I when rifles became available that could fire larger caliber rounds than handguns could, which allowed armies to engage more effectively against enemy troops without losing men or equipment. In 1922, President Warren G Harding signed Executive Order 10310 making it illegal “to import any firearm not registered with or licensed by Department of Justice”; this order effectively ended gun trafficking across state lines. The name "Sharon" derives from a Shawnee word meaning "happy place." The first settlers in Sharon were farmers who arrived in 1736. By 1800, Sharon had a population of 2,000 people and was served by one school and two churches. In 1824, the cornerstone for the first Methodist Episcopal Church in Sharon was laid and by 1830 there were 15 Presbyterian and Baptist churches in town. A blacksmith shop became an important business center for early Sharon residents because they could buy goods made in nearby Philadelphia without having to go into town. By 1860, there were 60 businesses in town with a combined payroll of $10 million. In 1865, local clothier James Wistar imported machinery to make fabricating clothes more efficient and this led to increased demand for labor which stimulated economic growth that continues to this day. In 1876–77 during the American Civil War (1861-65), when Union soldiers burned down many farms near Clearfield Valley while retreating from Gettysburg under orders from General Robert Ewell,[1] some residents began wearing Confederate uniforms as part of their protest against what they saw as military oppression.[2] This action caused friction within the community and several homes were set on fire during the war; one resident later said it "...wasn’t much fun living like that."[3] soon after hostilities ceased someLocal businesses reopened but most did not experience significant growth until after World War II when organized industry returned to Sharon with new homebuilders such as Bethlehem Steel Corporation[4]. Today's economy revolves around tourism which has grown significantly since development started along Route 685 predominantly due to its scenic beauty; several hotels have been built on Route 685 specifically catering to visitors who hike or bike through the valley including Governors Mountain Resort & Spa (which features views of Gettysburg National Military Park) as well as Mount Washington State Park (home of both Mount Surrounded Hills ski resort and Skyline Golf Course). There are also numerous small towns throughout Clearfield County with namesakes similar to those found in neighboring states such as Mifflinburg Township (Pennsylvania) honoring Benjamin Franklin while Ramseys Township honors AbrahamRamsey who donated land fordevelopment[5][6][7], Westmoreland Township honoring John PennsylvanianRevolutionary veteran George Washington Carver[8],[9] among others
