When Union General Ulysses S Grant captured Gettysburg on April 9, 1863 - one day after Army Chief of Staff General Joseph Hooker had march his army through central PA - many people considered it an strategic victory for the Confederacy because it demonstrated how powerful Union armies were compared to Confederate forces marching through rural areas like those around Bethlehem and Jenkintown (now Phila). However, many people also saw this battle as another example of why President Abraham Lincoln needed a strong military force to maintain control over America given that most state legislatures were controlled by Democrats instead of Republicans at that time.
