The population was 2,898 at the 2010 census.[1] The name means "place of Sharon tree" in the Lenape language. It is located on the Susquehanna River east of Pittsburgh and west of Johnstown. The first people to settle in what is now Sharon were German settlers from Alsace-Lorraine who arrived in 1795. They named their community after one of their own father's brothers, also named Hermann Wilhelm (1748-1825). In 1824, some American Revolutionary War veterans settled nearby and called themselves the Third Battalion of Cameronians or "the Patriots." These men built a log cabin on an old ford near present day Sharon Creek. Sharon was originally part of Allegheny County until it was split off from Pittsburgh in 1876 as part of a land reform movement led by Governor Andrew Mellon. At that time, many Germans moved intoAdams County because they could not find land elsewhere within Pittsburgh's limits but were forbidden to vote or hold office there until they had been naturalized citizens for five years. In 1909, local officials voted to rename Sharon after then-Governor William McKinley because he had helped promote western development in Adams County. The townsite was platted on November 3, 1909 by surveyors Charles Waddell and George Stephenson with the assistance of President James Kempton Grant who visited the area that year to see how new mining areas were being developed across central Pennsylvania at that time. According to legend, when Grant learned about what was happening he said: "I can't help but be impressed with this fine locality - I think I'll buy it."[2] McKinley acreage became known as Arlington Heights[3][4]. In 1916, during World War I,[5] General John J Pershing ordered all American troops stationed along both banks of the Susquehanna River between Monroeville and Johnstown be evacuated except for a brigade under Lieutenant Colonel Clarence Epps which remained behind to provide support for General Leonard Wood’s Union Army Corps besieging Petersburg.[6][7] The soldiers built three temporary bridges over Friendship Creek (now stream) just east of present day Sharon while awaiting transport back upstream across Monroeville Creek; these bridges still exist today as part of Interstate 376 traffic patterning around PA Game Commission lands adjacent to Parkland State Park north side entranceway/exit 52101 ZIP Code 15236
