Scranton, Pennsylvania is a city located in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania. The population was 25,898 at the 2010 census. It is one of two cities in Luzerne County and the county seat of Luzerne County. The other city is Scranton proper. The first settler in what is now Scranton was Nicholas Snyders who arrived on July 24, 1795 from King's village, England with his family. He named the town after himself and his birthplace - Saint Andrews parish in Scotland. In 1802, Samuel Chamberlain bought an acre (2 hectares) of land south of the current downtown area for $500 from Nicholas Snyders and began to develop it into a town center with a schoolhouse and shops for merchants. A ferry service operated from docks at Red Lion Creek to dock at Monmouth Island until 1912 when it became part of New York City's Port Authority system; this caused competition for water transportation which led to development along Second Avenue SE between Third StreetSW and Fourth StreetSW known as "Wistar Row". However by 1893 all but one business had closed down due to economic reasons or epidemics such as cholera that swept through central Pennsylvania during that period; only three businesses still remain open today: JF Kapp & Sons Shoes store (since1993), Erie Mills candy company (now Nello's Italian Baking Company) located on Fourth Avenue SW near Market Street SW between Seventh streetSE and Eighth streetSE, and American Tobacco Company (now Lorillard) located on Second Avenue SE just east of Center Square across from PNC bank headquarters originally built by John Duhigg & Sons grocery store in 1911-12 The last remaining business before 1993 was Haggerty’s hardware store also known locally as “the hardware barn” since it occupied most of First Avenue NE corner lot once used by jute mills called Haggerty’s Millinery Annexe later demolished . After World War II there continued growth downtown with notable establishments such as The Baptist Reformed Church built 1925-27 adjacent to present day Municipal building dating back to 1796 original plans by George Washington Carver . At same time many small businesses closure due to suburban growth although some reopened following war years such as National Biscuit Factory opened 1945 next door to Mellon Machine Shop destroyed 1945 while being replaced 1951 by IGA supermarket Chain Store moved 1948 inside present day Masonic Temple blocks interior demolition started 1954-. Over time many residents left or were forced out as suburbs grew louder with consequent loss or destruction/ obturation Of much older storefronts Downtown followed large scale construction projects Most notably enormous housing projects built after 1957 including Eastern State Penitentiary now Consulate General Offices buildings Complexes largest ever outside Chicagoparticularly Warehouse District erected 1950-1957 Central Business District rebuilt 1959-1981 facing Harbor View DriveNW Federal Courthouse redevelopment started 1990-. Many residents have returned over recent years adding more than 1 million people total residing Downtown among others numerous parks , libraries includes Community Library System founded 1978 consisting mostly volunteer staff own property extraterritorial jurisdiction under state law sharing powers WITH borough government
