Scranton is a city in Lackawanna County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 21,829 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Lackawanna County. The town of Scranton was laid out in 1795 by Nicholas Coll and named for Sir Robert Scranton, 6th Baronet who had settled in what is now Scranton in 1751. The first permanent settler arrived in 1798 when David Carroll moved from Northumberland Township to a tract of land that he purchased near present-day downtown Scranton. In 1814, Andrew Gregg built the first log cabin on the site of today's City Hall. In 1834, John Fenton founded the Second Presbyterian Church on Market Street and soon became known as one of Pennsylvania's leading preachers. He also helped organize local militia units during the American Civil War and later served as secretary of state under President Abraham Lincoln. When Lackawanna County was created in 1867, Scranton became its county seat. During World War II, Scranton played an important role as a munitions manufacturing center due to its location at the mouth ofthe Susquehanna River and its access to shipyards along the river's edge. However, after 1945 many businesses closed down or relocated to Philadelphia because of competition from new technology products emanating from nearby Pennsville and Pittsburgh.
