It is the largest city in Lackawanna County and one of the fastest-growing cities in the Keystone State. Scranton is located on the banks of the Delaware River just upstream of Philadelphia. The economy of Scranton is strongly tied to its manufacturing base and services sector. The first settlers in what is now Scranton were Germans who arrived from Silesia in 1795. They founded a small settlement on the north bank of the Delaware River near present-day Allentown. Over time, other groups followed suit and by 1800 there were over 50 settlements operating along both sides of the river. By 1815 all of these had been destroyed by an ice storm that struck during winter months.(1) In 1828, John McNaught erected a wooden bridge over the river which became known as “The McNaught Bridge” after him and his brother James McNaught built it.(2) In 1837, Abraham Lincoln was elected President of United States and when he took office erected a new Capitol Building on Main Street across from what is now Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company (now Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company). This building served as home to both Congress and President until 1862 when it burned down.(3) On November 3rd, 1907 Scranton hosted America’s first international fairgrounds exposition with more than 1 million visitors.(4) The fairgrounds are now part of University Park.) During World War II much activity took place within Scranton because much production took place for munitions companies such as DuPont(5), Bell Labs(6), RCA(7), Lockheed Martin(8), Westinghouse Electric Corporation (9), Bethlehem Steel(10), Standard Oil Co., etc….. Homegrown industries also produced automobiles including Ford Motor Company (1921)(11)and General Motors Corporation (1929)(12). After World War II ended many factories closed but others like Lucent Technologies continued operations through various partnerships until 2003 when they merged with Alcatel-Lucent Inc….Today much economic activity takes place within Downtown Scranton thanks to professional technology firms such as Google Earth[13], Apple Inc., Hewlett Packard Enterprise,[14], Siemens AG,[15], Twitter[16] Xerox Palo Alto Research Center,[17], Kaiser Permanente Medical Centers)[18] and Capital One Financial Services….Many traditional heavy industry jobs have been replaced by software jobs such as information technology or software engineering……..Today ScRANTON has become known for its strong entrepreneurial spirit with many businesses starting up without any prior investment…………….

He founded an ironworks on the Susquehanna River and became one of the most important entrepreneurs in early Scranton. In 1829, he built a ferry landing on Beaver Dam Creek to facilitate trade between his iron works and Erie County across the Monongahela River. During Reconstruction following the American Civil War, Scranton played an important role as a manufacturing center for war materials exports and as a destination for black refugees seeking refuge from Jim Crow America. After World War II, it grew increasingly suburban as jobs were created in western Pennsylvania's new suburbs outside of Scranton's limits. However, economic decline began to take hold beginning in the late 1990s and has persisted since then, leading to population loss and urban sprawl throughout much of Northeast Pennsylvania
