Scranton, Pennsylvania is a town in Lackawanna County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 20,846 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Lackawanna County. Scranton is located on the southern border of Pennsylvania and Delaware. The first Europeans to visit what is now Scranton were French traders in 1682. Scranton is a borough in the U.S. state of Pennsylvania, located in the Scranton-Wilkes-Barre, PA Metropolitan Statistical Area. As of the 2010 census, the borough had a population of 69,302. The borough was founded on November 3, 1825 by Francis Scott Key and Edward Everett Hale as a small community on the former site of what is now downtown Scranton. It was named after General John Forbes Scranton who served as Commandant at Fort Mifflin before becoming Governor of Virginia during the American Revolution. The first settler in Scranton was George Washington Carver who arrived there in 1788 and built a cabin on what is now Market Street. The town grew rapidly due to its location near two natural resources: coal and iron ore. In 1824, entrepreneur Andrew Mellon donated land to build an iron works which became one of the largest iron companies in America. The town reached its peak during World War II with businesses such as Bethlehem Steel producing munitions for Allied forces. After 1945, industry declined and poverty increased until gentrification began in the late 2000s led to new development around Collinwood Stadium/Municipal Complex and other neighborhoods within walking distance of downtown Scranton

In 1757, the British took over New Netherland and renamed it Pennsylvania. The town of Scranton was founded by merchants from Philadelphia in 1763. It became an important transportation center for goods arriving from the Indian Territories and from shipments going out of Pennsylvania to the British Empire. In 1819, John Fenton founded a paper mill here that became one of the largest in the United States. The town also developed into a manufacturing center with production of everything from oil lamps to shoes and other products. The population reached 10,000 by 1860, but declined thereafter until it peaked at 15,000 in 1920.
