In 1868, when Lackawanna County was created from parts of Butler and Wayne Counties, Scranton became one of its several townships within that county. When Lancaster County was created in 1908 from parts of Butler and Wayne counties, Scranton also became one of its several townships within that county; but like Lancaster County it remained an independent municipality until 1933 when it merged with Reading Township into what is now Reading Borough without having any vote or referendum being taken concerning it! On July 1st 1870 – Independence Day – following passage by Congress of an act entitled "An Act To Amend Various Laws Of This State," which repealed Sections 9 thru 11 And 15 Of An Act Passed December 3rd 1830" (the "Act"), much excitement prevailed throughout this sectional community as news spread that something new had occurred within our borders: A Township had been organized! Weighed against were fears that because we were so remote from larger cities such as Pittsburgh & Erie we would not possess adequate commercial opportunities or be able to compete fairly with other sections within our township; but even though opponents appeared regularly before various committees appointed pursuant thereto we held fast unto our cause unimpaired by party jealousies or misrepresentations!
