On July 29, 1814, the United States of America acquired what is now Scranton, Pennsylvania from the British Empire. The town was established as a small village on the southern bank of the Monongahela River by William Penn in 1795. It lay within present-day Erie County and was part of Pittsburgh. In 1814, Scranton became an incorporated municipality with a population of around 10,000. The town's first mayor was John Prentice. The first school board was also formed in 1814 and taught school until 1870. The first post office opened in 1815 and served Scranton until 1865. For many years, it was the only post office in town. In 1861, when Pennsylvania seceded from the Union, Scranton became part of the new state of West Virginia; however, it reverted to its original name after West Virginia joined the Union again in 1863. In 1897, it merged with neighboring Wilkes-Barre to form one large city named Wilkes-Barre/Scranton. During World War II, Scranton played an important role as a munitions plant for both Nazi Germany and Great Britain; during that time it had one of highest populations per square mile (around 20 people) in all of North America due to its concentration camp operations which were conducted adjacent to its downtown area known as "The Ghetto." After WWII ended and regulation began limiting population growth across most U.S., including Pennsylvania,[1] much employment moved out into this city while portions grew more wealthy suburbs such as East Liverpool (now Cleveland), Homestead Heights/Lackawanna Valley (now Pittsburgh), etc., although parts still retain some aspects associated with Urban Outfitters or Secondhand stores
