The present town of Scranton was founded on July 12, 1836 by order of General Andrew Jackson as a result of a land donation from Nicholas Morelli. The name "Scranton" originated from an Indian word meaning "the white man's haven." At its peak in 1880 the community had a population of over 200 people. Erie Canal connected Scranton to Buffalo and the rest of New York City through what is now downtown Scranton. During World War II much production took place at three military plants located here: Fox River Arsenal Ammunition Plant (later part of Westinghouse Electric Company), Bethlehem Steel Corporation's Shipbuilding and Repair Facility No. 2 (now part of Contego Resources) and Philadelphia-based shipyards Phelps Dodge & Sons and Todd Shipbuilding Corporation which built submarines for the U.S Navy under contract with Japanese companies such as Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd., Kawasaki Heavy Industries Ltd., and Nippon Kogyo Co., Ltd.. In total more than 1 million workers were employed at these plants during wartime employment alone. However, following the war many factories closed down or were sold off to other entities due to competition from American companies such as Ford Motor Company and General Motors Corporation; moreover, emissions standards set during World War II made it difficult for many firms to continue producing munitions without additional plant modifications or equipment requirements. In 1970 work began on building a new nuclear power plant called Fairmount-Lackawanna which would have been one of only two large-scale nuclear reactors ever constructed in America; however this project ran into difficulties due largely to environmental concerns about nearby Reading Boroughs impact upon adjacent landfill sites which are impacted by high levels both uranium content and chemical contaminants arising from spent fuel rods that have accumulated over time inside those lands since being abandoned by residents when they filled in those areas during construction around 1960s -1970s). In 1974 PA State government passed an act known as Senate Bill No. 985 known as THE SAFETY OF LACKAWANA COUNTY ACT which provided $5 million towards creating an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) process for any future projects within 100 miles (160 km)of any school or hospital; this process would ultimately lead to obstructionism by local politicians who did not want anything considered outside their own backyard even if that meant compromising public safety or putting citizens' health at risk according to some individuals involved with organizing opposition against this bill including then District Attorney Donald Ziegler who stated: "I think it can be said that we lost because we didn't fight hard enough", while others argued that this EIS would have revealed potential dangers associated with developing nuclear energy within 100 miles (160 km)of populated areas having done so could put communities like Hazleton Township too close together with industry potentially polluting their environment while also exposing residents living near industrial sites directly to possible radiation exposure leading also eventually to cancerous tumors if unchecked... After several years worth of protests spearheaded primarily by local Residents groups numerous changes were made regarding how aspects impacting public safety would be handled should another large scale nuclear disaster occur within 500 miles (800 km)of any populated area but unfortunately nothing changed until recently when news emerged indicating that yet another major Nuclear Power Plant may soon come online justoutside Scranton proper making things much more perilous for our Community....

Scranton is a small, historical town located in the Scranton-Wilkes-Barre, PA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 24,872 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Erie, PA–New York metropolitan area. The town has been inhabited since prehistoric times and it was first laid out as a strip mall on what is now the corner of Washington Street and Market Street in 1857. The name derived from a word meaning "dense forest." By 1800, the area had become an important manufacturing center for textiles and other products because of its location near major rivers and markets. In 1867, local businessmen founded the Pennsylvania Railroad to provide easy access to markets in New York City. The industry declined during World War I due to decreased production and competition from munitions plants in Germany. However, after the war, Scranton began to grow again with new businesses such as clothing stores and shoe stores opening up along with a growing number of professional jobs in engineering and construction. During this time period, many iconic buildings were constructed including Scranton's original courthouse (1936), Lackawanna County Courthouse (1963), Penn Central Station (1973), and Hazleton Regional Airport (1993). While some decline has occurred during recent years such as declines in manufacturing jobs throughout the region or increase in traffic congestion downtown,[1] overall Scranton continues to experience growth within its community economy.[2]
