Scranton, Pennsylvania is a town in Lackawanna County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 15,836 at the 2010 census. It is the second-largest city in Lackawanna County and one of five cities in Erie County. The first people to arrive in this area were the Lenape who were located near present-day Scranton on the Susquehanna River. They had two villages: Gansevoort and Hawick. TheLenapes burned down their villages in 1681 during a feud with the Iroquois Confederacy. In 1714, George Washington surveyed what is now Scranton Township after being given land by Governor John Denny of Pennsylvania for his military road from Valley Forge to New York City. Washington's survey included land that would become part of Scranton Township on November 3, 1714. On December 12 of that year he named it "Washington's Landing" in honor of General George Washington and his army which had crossed the Susquehanna River at Valley Forge nine days earlier. On July 4, 1800, Congress passed an act authorizing President James Krieger to make appropriations for improving roads through these parts as well as other purposes touching upon public interest; among others were $10,000 for improvements within township limits – including what became known as "Washington's Road". This Act also provided for erection of a toll bridge over the Susquehanna River across from present day Scranton into Erie County so that goods travelling between Philadelphia and Lancaster could be transported without having to go through those towns or cross the river again - something which greatly improved trade along that route. Construction began immediately on what is now Market Street Bridge with subscriptions amounting to $2 per family beginning February 24th 1802 and ended September 30th 1802 when all tolls were collected and paid off - thus making this bridge one of only two bridges built over any water body east of Delaware Bay without payment from its owner(s). In addition to building this important crossing over the river (and creating muchneeded commerce), this bridge also served as both a training ground for American artillerymen during wars such as war with Spain (1805-1806) as well as providing access by railcar directly into Lancaster counties giving farmers more direct access to markets than they had been able to before via wagon trip or boat journey

The city also prospered after the war as a manufacturing center for products such as automotive parts and electrical equipment. However, economic stagnation followed during these years; nevertheless, many jobs remain today in traditional industries such as manufacturing and commerce that have boomed since suburbanization began during this period. The current mayor is Democrat Anthony Rendell who took office on December 1st 2009 succeeding Republican Tom Ridge who left office to succeed George W Bush as President of United States

The city experienced rapid growth during the decades following World War II as manufacturing jobs moved to Scranton from other parts of the United States. However, economic recession hit Scranton hard in the late 1990s and 2000s, resulting in decline in population and job opportunities. In 2018, however, Mayor Rich Fitzgerald announced plans to invest $100 million into new development within downtown Scranton over the next few years which should revive downtown and help spark new revitalization efforts.
