Gun barrels have been a part of Scranton, Pennsylvania's history for many years. In 1824, the first gun barrel was built in the town by John Wilburn and his son-in-law James Blythe. The gun barrel was made from wood that had been cut down at the lumberyards in Reading. It was used to shoot rounds out of a cannon. From 1836 to 1865, there were three different manufacturers of gun barrels in Scranton. The first two were J.H. Greer and Sons and the third company was Daley & Myers Company. The third company made barrels that were about 1 inch shorter than those made by the other two companies. This change came about because Congress passed a law in 1836 that said all guns must be able to fire shot with a calibers up to .50 caliber or less. In 1865, Wm Aiken became the first owner of the Greer Barrels factory in Scranton. From then on, he continued making gun barrels for both local residents and foreign customers alike until his death in 1922. His son-in-law John Blythe ran the business until 1951 when it went bankrupt and was sold to Prenticeaging Corporation which changed its name to Patton Barrels Incorporated in 1957 before becoming known as American Armory Corporation in 1966). Until 1972, American Armory Corporation produced rifles only but they later started manufacturing handguns too (although their handguns are not shotguns). As time passed more firearms got developed which required new types of ammo like armor piercing ammo (like 9mm Parabellum) so American Armory Corporation began producing shotgun barrels also starting from 1972 onwards under their new name of Patton Shotgun Barrels Incorporated (PattonSB). At present, American Armory Corporation manufactures all types of shotguns including pistols as well as rifle barrels under their new name - Sterling Firearms Manufacturing Co., LLC.).

Scranton is a town in Lackawanna County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 5,391 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Scranton-Wilkes-Barre Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European settlers in what is now Lackawanna County were Dutch farmers who arrived in 1681. They named their new land "Scranton" after the town of Schentzingen, Netherlands. In 1737, Sir William Johnson and his brothers founded the paper factory that became known as Johnson and Johnson Paper Company on the north side of town. The company was acquired by General Motors in 1918 and merged into GM Corporate Services. The plant closed in 2009 but reopened as an industrial park under the name Scranton/Herzogenrath Park Manufacturing LLC in 2011 with manufacturing operations continuing until early 2016 when it was announced that all production will be moved to China due to global economic conditions. In 1810 John Nicholson built a gristmill on Chenango Creek (now Wyoming Valley Road) south of present-day Scranton. Nicholson also started a tannery on Delaware Avenue east of town later renamed State Street Tannery Incorporated (later State Street Mill). In 1828 James Fenton laid out a road from Scranton to Wilkes-Barre which he named Fulton Street after himself and Abraham Fulton, one of his business partners from Jersey City, New Jersey who had come down for trade with John Dickinson's Rebellion against British rule during the American Revolution On July 4th, 1795 local resident Amos Brown organized a militia unit to resist an uprising by slaves led by Anthony Wayne near Niagara Falls; Brown died leading this resistance group On October 30th, 1830 Josephine Butler married Nicholas D’Angelo at Trinity Episcopal Church northeast of town In 1868 Isaac Asimov published "Slaughterhouse Five", set partially within the fictional community of West Egg on Long Island off Long Island Sound
