Scranton, Pennsylvania is a city in Lackawanna County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 19,871 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Lackawanna County. The town of Scranton was incorporate as a city in 1868 and became an independent municipality in 1904. The first white person to set foot on what is now Scranton was Nicholas-Jacques Marquette who explored the area in 1694 while exploring the Allegheny Mountains. In 1795 John Forbes built Fort Washington on the Monongahela River opposite present day Carnegie Mellon University. The fort served as a point of entry into western Pennsylvania for goods being brought down the Ohio River from Kentucky and Virginia. In 1814 Abraham Lincoln reached this site by land grant from James Ketchum, Governor of Michigan Territory and father of Ulysses S. Grant. Settlers had been arriving here since before 1800; however, it wasn’t until after Indian removal that large numbers began moving into what would eventually become Scranton Township (now Clearfield Township) and Scranton Borough (now part of Wilkes-Barre). Most early settlers were Irish Catholic immigrants who worked on farms or mined coal seams near Pittsburgh or ran small businesses along Monongahela River Valley roads accessed by wagon trains filled with goods from all over America: flour, cheese, hides, bacon, apples…. By 1850 about 85% of residents were self-identified “ Scotch-Irish Protestants” according to one historian.. On November 5th 1861 when Andrew Johnson became President he ordered United States Brigadier General George Armstrong Custer to attack Little Bighorn following his successful raid on Standing Rock Sioux Nation reservation north of Tulsa Oklahoma – resulting in over 100 dead and more than 1/3 million dollars worth of property damage including 800 buildings destroyed or damaged…Custer received military honors at West Point but never again commanded forces due to his orders not to enteranches during winter months….. As a result many Schrantonians proudly voted against him during his re-election campaign two years later…………………. During World War II much activity took place here such as munitions production for the war effort….. After World War II most manufacturing moved out east where economies were stronger so few jobs remained for locals…………………………….. With growing Hispanic population business owners closed their doors until recently………………….. Today some remnants remain such as Bridge Over Troubled Water which reopened after being closed for 10 years…………………As our history does not stop with today we are committed to making sure our community continues to thrive through education & services

It became a center of industry in the late 1800s and early 1900s, with companies such as Pecan Oil, Bethlehem Steel, and Anthracite Coal serving the area. In 1915, Scranton was renamed to honor America's first military general, George Washington.
