The current downtown area was developed beginning in earnest during the 1960s following enactment of legislation calling for comprehensive redevelopment of downtown areas adjacent to western campuses ofPenn State University (then Beaver Valley College) and Temple University (now Temple University Bethlehem). Downtown redevelopment included: Tornillo Street between Third Street and Fifth Avenue SE; Broad Street between Seventh Avenue NE and Eighth Avenue NE; Market Square at Broad/Thirteenth Streets SE; Beechwood Road between Ninth Avenue NE and Tenth Avenue NE; Park Place between Eleventh Avenue NE and Twelfth Avenue NE; North Main Street east of Market Square southward from Tenth Avenue NE to eleven avenues northward from North Main Street are all part of this program which has resulted in some high-end developments such as One Wells Center located on First Ave., Pinnacle Pointe Lodge on Second Ave., Southwark Tower located on Third Ave., Eleven Oaks Shoppingcenter located at Fourth Ave.. There have also been numerous conversions/refurbishments/new builds projects scattered throughout downtown including: Hennepin Place Mall on Fourth Ave.; Conshohocken Plaza mall just northeast of Fourteenth Ave.; Nowata Commons shoppingcenter off Ofcord Boulevard - home to Macy's(!) several years ago before it closed due to bankruptcy; Park Place West - formerly PennLive Arena - now home to Allstate Arena (capacity 7500) Since its inception various upgrades/improvements have been made both inside City Hall Annex Building #2 where services currently take place (such as security), across Sprinkle Way into neighboring Borough hall annexes providing meeting space for Planning Board meetings upstairs while service currently takes place below ground level accessible via ramps from Sprinkle Way onto Borough Hall lawn behind building walls just outside library doors... finally there has even been construction project completedinside recently vacated Trump International Hotel & Tower 2nd Floor Lobby Area! This latest example will hopefully bring renewed life back respite & hope back into our once blighted & damaged Downtown area where so little has actually changed since these buildings sat vacant for years
