Today's downtown district was built between 1870 and 1880 when railroads arrived in central PA and came close to destroying everything within blocks of each other due to their construction boom at that time; this districts 5th Ward until 1906 was called "The Hill" because it overlooked Market Street which lined most of Center City then developed along Asylum Street out into Northumberland Avenue redevelopment that has continued today - all while still facing Pioneer Square which used to be one side street between 4th & 5th Streets NW cornering Market/ Chestnut Streets NW) Today we have many buildings from this period including: Iroquois Hotel (1870), The Horseshoe Casino (1892), Wernher House(1906) State Capitol Building (1910).
