The first settlers who arrived in what is now Reading were farmers who traveled downriver from Huntingdon County for agricultural purposes and cattle drives during the early 1800s. By 1838 all but one family living in Potterstown had left for another location because of poor soil conditions and dense forests near Pottersville. The last resident remaining there died in 1902 when an oil well was drilled nearby and produced natural gas which made Reading an important trade center for early twentieth century industry including coal mining, steel production and shipping
