In 1825, the United States acquired land east of Philadelphia known as western Pennsylvania and included what is now Reading. The town was incorporated on November 6, 1867. In 1830, when Abraham Lincoln was elected president of the United States, he visited Reading and spoke to some residents there about his plans for government reform in America. Lincoln's visit inspired many residents to become politically active and they began to promote reading as an important part of American culture. In 1865, while fighting in the Civil War with Confederate forces near Gettysburg National Military Park in Maryland (now Baltimore), Union General Ulysses S Grant ordered his troops to burn down Readings library building after learning that its citizens had stored weapons inside it! However, this event has been mythologized by historians as an overreaction on part of Grant and not representative of how most Americans thought about libraries at that time or any other place during the war! The first public library opened in Reading on October 26th, 1868. It was built by local resident Augustus Kelley with financial support from Andrew Dickson Cameron III., one of President Johnson's close friends and a patron of classical music and artistry throughout Philadelphia County. At first it served only locals but soon became open to all who wished to use it including transient visitors from surrounding towns such as Westphalia and Lancaster whose days spent roaming around these areas could no longer be tolerated anymore! On July 12th 1912reading lost its post office because EP&I merged into Pittsburgh Courier company giving their subscribers access to both services free! As post offices went out of business throughout the country due to consolidation efforts by telephone companies like AT&T & BellSouth those days are long gone but evidence remains behind current day streets names like Pike Street & Wilson Boulevard which bear physical traces linking EP&I's former mailing address (523 Market St) with today's PBX/mailing address (First Hill Business Center)
