In 1830, Isaac Townsend bought a large tract including what is now Pottsville from John Dickinson and laid out a town site on it near present day Germanna Avenue and Spring Street (then known as Newtown Road). Townsend renamed it Townsendstown after himself and laid out streets that parallel Germanna Avenue to this day (Townsend road runs between these Streets). In 1828, Samuel Adams established an ironworks adjacent to where he had planted wheat fields two years earlier near what is now Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Trafficway (I-PA 81), just south of present day Hill View Drive at exit 15A off I-376W (Upper Arnon Road). This early Iron Works would become one of America's largest producers of pig iron until shutdown by Japanese invaders during World War II along with other American industry prior to their invasion." pottersvillepa@aol
