Pottsville was founded in 1795 by General George Washington and Colonel Nicholas Pott as a small community on the Allegheny River near what is now Forbes Air Force Base. The name may be derived from Pottersville Manor (now known as McKees Rocks), which was located in what is now Pottsville. In 1797, General Washington's family moved to Pottsville from Yorktown Heights, Virginia and built a home on the riverbank. Washington died in 1800 and his widow continued to live there with their five children until her death in 1802. General George Washington's eldest son, John Adams, took over management of the house and business when his father died in 1804; he renamed it "Adams House". Adams continued to manage the estate until his death in 1828. His second son, John Quincy Adams Sr., became president of America from 1829-1835 and also managed the estate during this time. He sold it to a group of Americans led by Simon Cameron who named it Cameron Village after him before purchasing it back from them in 1840. He named his discovery "Le Moyne's Mine," but it was soon renamed "PottsVILLE." George Washington visits Philadelphia during his Farewell Address on July 4, 1792 and marvels at how well-provisioned Pennsylvania is for defense against British attack; he orders that 10 acres (40 hectares) of land be set aside for a military post to protect Philadelphia from such an attack should they come forth again someday. In 1802, construction began on Fort Mifflin at present-day Harrisburg as part of Ulysses S Grant's Army Corps of Engineers project to secure Congress’ right to build canals across Pennsylvania under President James K Polk’s administration two years earlieron April 12th,. Construction continued until May 1862 when Union forces destroyed it after taking over Fort Mifflin from Confederate General Robert E Lee.. Afterward most references to Fort Mifflin are concerned with its use as a ammunition depot for Union troops during World War II..
