In 1848, when Dickinson College opened up in nearby Lancaster, Pottsville began to attract students from across Pennsylvania and Delaware Valley counties. This growth led to increased development around the town, which now has over 20 businesses located within its borders. Thanks to its location near both Philadelphia and Lancaster County, Pottsville also saw significant population growth during both World War II and post-war times. In 1951, after years of planning and construction effort, the Rotunda Shopping Center opened up in downtownPottsville – later renamed The Pavilion – giving residents easy access to all that downtown had to offer. today, potters from all over Keystone State come together each year at Festival Park in downtownPottsville for their annual event known as Potter's Picnic
Pottsville was founded in 1753 by George Potts and his wife Susannah. The town was named after the Potts family's holdings in Virginia. In 1798, the town changed its name to Easton, after John Easton, a member of the Pennsylvania Assembly. Pottsville grew rapidly during the 19th century due to its location on the Susquehanna River and its access to transportation. The population of Pottsville peaked at around 30,000 in 1851 but declined thereafter as development moved away from the town. In 1924, Pottsville was merged into Lehigh Township.
