Pottsville is a town in Armstrong County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 5,594 at the 2010 census. It is home to the Pottsville Arsenal National Historic Site and Pottsville College. The Pottsville Arsenal was founded in 1777 by Captain John Wilkes as a gunpowder depot on the Susquehanna River. The arsenal was used for military and civilian purposes until 1921, when it became part of the U.S. Army's Fort Monmouth Weapons Plant. In 1934, the arsenal was transferred to the Department of Defense as part of Fort Monmouth National Monument. In 1841, Alonzo Harris built a small brick building on Main Street in Pottsville to serve as his home and office while he prepared to open a second rifle factory in that town which would later become known as Winchester Arms Company (Winchester). Morris Ketcham served as secretary of state from 1859-1861; he also refereed questions about arms purchases with President James Buchanan during this time period. On February 22nd 1861, Ketcham addressed a crowd assembled outside his new building to announce that Winchester had been chosen by government officials as one of three finalists for an armaments contract worth $5 million dollars with British manufacturer Royal Ordnance Factory Ltd.. This purchase led to Dodge Firearms Manufacturing Company being established two years later in 1863 within what is now called "Olde Towne Square". It should be noted that both companies were privately owned - Dodge by Jacob Dodge and Royal Ordnance Factory Ltd.'s parent company BSA - until their acquisition by Winchester shortly before Abraham Lincoln's inauguration in 1865 makes them officially government-owned firearms manufacturers under Title 24 US Code § 648 (the Manufacture or Acquisition of Arms). The first rifles made at the Potterstown Armory were Model 1853 Springfield Rifles - these rifles are occasionally referred to erroneously as "Potters" because they actually bore no resemblance whatsoever to contemporary Sharps rifles! However, despite this confusion caused by many books/magazines publishing inaccurate information about early firearms manufacturing efforts here at Homefront HQ... it remains our belief that all old potters' guns are indeed original products!

The town was then renamed "Philadelphia" in honor of President Andrew Johnson's visit there that year.
Pottsville is a small town in York County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 5,554 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. It is the birthplace of General George Washington and the home of Pottsville Academy. The first Europeans to visit Pottsville were French voyageurs who passed through in 1682 while on their way from Canada to Narragansett Bay. They named it "Natchez" after one of their villages in Nouvelle-France. By 1765, when James Craig built a cabin on the little stream that flows through Pottsville into Monongahela River, he had renamed it for Colonel John Forbes, 3rd Baronet (1675-1752), an English general and politician who had served as Governor of New York City from 1725 to 1729 and then as Secretary of State under George II from 1730 to 1733. In 1800, Andrew Mellon bought land near what is now known as First Street in Pottsville and began developing it into a plantation colony called Mellon's Valley Farms where he raised tobacco and other crops. In 1810, Mellon donated land along Third Avenue north of Market Street to form what is now Penn Central Railroad's Main Line Station site; today this site forms part of University Park/Mallory Square Shopping Centre south of US 27/71 exit 12A off I-376). After years of hard work by his employees and thousands more acres purchased by him over time, Mellon was able to establish himself as one of Pennsylvania's leading businessmen and political leaders during its early days as a state including serving three terms (1846-1851) as governor before his death at age 86 in 1892). He remains one of Pennsylvanians' most notable historical figures dating back more than two centuries. In 1868,[4] Abraham Lincoln visited Pottsville on his way westward on the Underground Railroad during the American Civil War;[5] later that year he met with local officials there about organizing support for Union forces fighting against Confederate forces across the country. President Ulysses S Grant came to visit Pottsville twice during his two terms (1869-1877)[6] - once in February 1870[7][8][9] when he stopped at nearby Pittengertown for lunch following a speech delivered by General Robert E Lee[10][11][12], and again in November 1871[13][14] when he attended a dinner given by Mayor John Cribbins commemorating 100 years since independence from Great Britain.[15][16] A large statue depicting both Lincoln and Grant was erected outside Main Line Station in 1893.[17],[18]. Although potash mining ceased operations here around 1900,[19], coalmining continued until 1958,[20], with some production still occurring until 1984,[21]. The last active mine closed down about 2006.[22]. Today much surface coal remains but extensive underground workings have been preserved for research purposes at nearby Monongahela National Forest employee training center adjacent to adjoining Armstrong Circle shopping centre which has become known locally simply as 'the mine'. Some plans are being made to reopen these mines but progress has been slow due mainly to lackadaisical attitude by management

Pottsville was first known for its agricultural products, such as potatoes, peas, and corn. In 1802, the town became a stop on the Erie Canal. The population of Pottsville peaked at around 30,000 in 1860 but has declined significantly since then. Today, only a few thousand people live in Pottsville. The first settlers in Pottsville were farmers who arrived from England in1755. They brought with them many tools and materials necessary for farming including plows, hoes, Tillers’ Tools (a type of shovel), planters’ crops (potatoes and other vegetables), barns and other buildings necessary for their new home. The early residents were very religious and decided to name their settlement after one of their favorite English saints – St. John the Baptist. In 1799, John Potts donated land to build a church in honor of his saint. The church was dedicated on November 6th of that year by Bishop James Drummond of Baltimore County- an event which is still celebrated today as Parish Day in Pottsville. The growth of pottery production began to take hold within the town soon after it was founded due to its good clay soil and plentiful water resources available nearby. Many potters built Their own homes or rented space from others until finally having their own building erected near where they lived thereafter- making potsteries one of the most important economic activities within this small community during its early years! During Prohibition Era (1924- 1933) many businesses closed because they could not compete against illegal liquor sales without breaking federal law! However local citizens managed to keep several such businesses open despite heavy taxation! One such business that survived this period was Girding & Moffat’s grocery store which reopened following prohibition repeal some time later! In recent times there have been efforts made by some members of the community to revive interest within pottery production through education programs/festivals/economic development initiatives which have had mixed results thus far; however much remains unchanged from prior generations when it comes to daily life hereabouts!
