Pottsville is a historic town in Lycoming County, Pennsylvania. It was founded in 1798 by the brothers Peter and John Potts. The town was named for General George Washington. As of the 2010 census, its population was 11,715.
Pottsville is a small town in Butler County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 1,564 at the 2010 census. Pottsville is part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in what would become Pottsville was James Webb in 1795. He and his family were Methodists and their farmstead went unclaimed for years because many settlers had reservations in that area at the time. In 1827, George Armstrong Custer died near Pottsville while on his way to Ford Motor Company's factory outside of Pittsburgh. Jethro Gibbs, an early settler and son of George Gibbs sold some land to John Potter in 1828. By 1830, Potter had built a log cabin on the site which became known as "The Potter Cabin". When he died in 1851, his widow moved into it with her children and continued to live there until she died in 1902. The present day house was designed by architect Edward Fenton for Mrs. Potter's daughter-in-law Alice Morse Barney and built between 1916 and 1918 with funds provided by Mr. Barney (the founder of Allegheny Steel). In 1865, Simeon Dickinson started a sawmill here which operated until 1951 when it closed due to poor economics; however, there are still remnants of the mill located along Beaver Street south of I-79W near where Penn Carbon Paper now stands (a subsidiary of Cambria Coal & Iron Corporation).
