The Pottsville Railroad reached Pottsville in 1825. The first settler in what would become Pottsville was John Potter who arrived in 1784 from Connecticut. He and his wife Susannah built a log cabin on the banks of the Donelson River. In 1800, Joseph Potter founded the town of Potterstown on land that he had bought from James Forbes. In 1825, John Potter donated to the township four miles (6 km) east of present-day Pottsville two miles (3 km) north of center and two and one-half miles (4 km) west of where current Westmoreland Avenue meets the Donelson River. Pottersville assumed its present name in 1839 when Isaac Swayne moved to the township from Greensburg and reincorporated as Pottsville Township. By 1860, there were 10 families living in pottersvillage and 2 churches; total population by 1880 was 21 residents.. In 1881–82 local farmers established a market here for their produce which became known as "the village." A post office was started here on November 15, 1881 by Phebe Fenton with Mablette Snyder as first female mail carrier; it closed on December 3, 1888 due to economic reasons.. In 1893–94 David Ladd opened a gristmill here which still operates today under new management as DAVID LADD GRISTMILL RD LLC.. On July 1st 1899 seven-year old Emmaline Scudder died after being run over by her horse while playing nearby on Patterson Avenue near her home.; this event is commemorated every year by an event called "EMMALINE'S DAY" at her school house where students parade through her yard for breakfast!

Pottsville is a small town located in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 1,814 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Philadelphia-based Metropolitan Statistical Area. Pottsville was first settled in 1795 by Capt. Johnstown and his family after they were driven out of their home in nearby philly by Native American warriors. The community became an agricultural center with potters and weavers making baskets, hats, and other items from local clay and straw. Even today, Pottsville's main industry is agriculture with small businesses providing most goods consumed within the town limits. The early history of Pottsville can be traced back to Captain Johnstown who built a cabin on Beaver Creek in 1795 following his expulsion from Philadelphia by Native American warriors. At that time, Beaver Creek was one of several watercourses which served as transportation routes for traders traveling between Philadelphia and New York City. After Captain Johnstown's departure, many other settlers followed suit until there were only a few families remaining in the area when it was taken over by the federal government for military training purposes during the Revolutionary War (1775-1783). For this reason, Pottsville is sometimes referred to as "the Training Ground" due to its significant role in American military history during that time period. In 1802, Colonel George Washington established a military academy at nearby West Point which would become known as Georgetown University later on. This caused some displacement among existing residents as well as new arrivals who were forced to leave their homes behind during this time period. As a result of this situation, much development occurred within Pottsville throughout the 19th century including: The construction of schools such as Northern Illinois College (now Northwestern University) which opened its doors in 1836; an Masonic Lodge #2 whose building still standsapproximately two blocks east of Main Street; and Drury House Tavern & Saloon which operated from 1811 until 1861 when it burned down."
