The early gun slings were made out of hemp or cotton cloth and could be attached to either side of the bowstring with a piece of leather or webbing. The purpose of using a gun sling was to allow some percentage of accuracy when firingarrows because it allowed for more stability while shooting due to the added weight and length of thebowstring. Pottsville is a town located in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 9,878 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. The Pottsville Volunteer Fire Department has been serving the community since 1851 and is one of the oldest volunteer fire departments in America. The first settler in Pottsville was James Potter who arrived on May 11, 1786, while surveying land grant 7 patent #2 from William Paterson. Potter's family had come overland from England several years earlier and his father James had also settled near modern-day Monroeville, PA. James and his wife Mary began to farm in what is now Pottsville about 1800 and soon their children John (1789-1868) and Martha (1792-1871) were born too. In 1805, they purchased 640 acres of which they developed into a town called Potterstown. They named their new village after themselves – Pottsville because it offered good grazing land for cattle and because two branches of the Potter family had originated there: one from West Chester Township in Lancaster County and another from Mifflin Township in Centre County). By 1830, all but five families still lived in Potterstown although by then it had become an agricultural center with about eighty buildings including taverns, stores, churches and schoolhouses as well as a sawmill operated by Captain George Hadden on Main Street. One can still see evidence of these early days today when one drives down Main Street between 2nd Avenue & 3rd Avenue he or she will see many pioneer homes which date back to that time including those built by Mrs Clyde Hadden on her large lot north of 3rd Avenue – this lot forms much of the present day core gridiron within Pottsville’s City limits! In 1834 James Atherton sold 8 patented lots (#4-6) to Abram Beecher for $1 each; these Lots Nos 4-6 became known as “The Beechers” property because they were rented out by Abraham Beecher to other farmers during that time frame until he bought them back later that same year for $10 per annum! This early period shows us how important it was for someone to have title to something before starting any kind of agriculture so that they could sell their product & get some revenue! Many farmers throughout those years did just this! After purchasing those eight lots #4-6 we can begin looking at what may have been our current downtown site area which would be bounded on the east by Third Avenue & Northampton Street NW; on the south by ButlerStreet/Parker Road NW; on the west by South Third Ave./East Market Street SE (& eventually Beaverhill Rd.) Here we can see evidence that once again it was not just an agricultural Village but also contained some businesses such as a Post Office ( Stamp Room), Bankruptcy Court House (now used as apartments), Jail etc…. even Allenbrook Cemetery exists today thanks to our wonderful Local History Museum!!! Today there are over 100 businesses represented within DowntownPottsVILLE!! It truly does appear like pottersvillians never stopped growing……….. In 1836 Abram Beecher married Johanna Leipert who came overland with him from Pennsylvania via Delaware River crossing – she was also associated with him through marriage when he next moved into what is now known as Easton Township where they both lived until his death in 1840; after Abram's death she continued living with him until her own death sometime around 1850). Johanna played an important role early on not only within Pottstown but also nearby Easton where she ran a boarding house known as The Female Home until its closure around 1870 due to lack of customers or competition from other places! It should be noted here that prior to 1840 most women stayed home raising families rather than traveling long distances outside their immediate vicinity!! Some women must have traveled quite a bit during this time frame since almost every township had at least one female business active back then!!! Today, portions of Pottsville are located within Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, while the rest is within York County. The town had a population of about 362 residents in 2000.
