Pottsville is a town in Lackawanna County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 9,812 at the 2010 census. Pottsville is the county seat of Lackawanna County. The first people to live in Pottsville were the Lenape Indians who lived along the Susquehanna River. They built their wigwams on the banks of the river and hunted deer, bear, and other animals. In 1795, Captain James Monaghan arrived in Pottsville with his army and founded what would become known as Monaghan's Ferry Landing on present-day US Route 422. In 1809, Colonel George Armstrong Custer passed through Pottsville on his way from Council Bluffs to Fort Dearborn, Michigan during his campaign against Native Americans. On November 10, 1814 – five days after General John Pugh's forced march around that village – a battle took place between American and British forces at Battle Creek near modern day Cumberland Township. The British lost about 70 men while American losses were much higher (over 100 men). This battle helped bring an end to Canada's war with Great Britain and marked the beginning of what would become known as America's Civil War. In 1865 Pottsville was home to both Abraham Lincoln and Andrew Johnson when they attended a pro-Union rally there before going on to New York City for inauguration ceremonies that same day. In 1875 Potter Lumber Company owner Isaac McCoy established one ofAmerica’s first industrial cities by moving his lumberyard from rural Lackawanna County into thenmail order city of Pittsburgh which had just been founded by Anthony Comstock also named Isaac McCoy having acquired title to land east ofJohnstown where he planned locate main millrace renamed “McCoy” Falls thenceforth pottersfield creek flowing south meeting Allegheny River south side now part of Monongahela National Forest while company town developed north side now part of Clearwater Beach Borough

Pottsville was founded in 1786 by Sir John Forbes and named for Colonel George Washington's estate in Virginia. The first settlements in what is now Pottsville were made on the site of present-day Monroeville, then called "Novo Valentia". In 1786, Forbes founded Pottsville on land he had bought from Neil Armstrong's father. The original home of the Pottsvilles was built on a hill near what is now Market Square. At its peak, Pottsville had a population of 10,000 people and occupied over fifty acres ( twenty square kilometers). In 1814, during the Mexican War, General James K. Polk sent 1,500 troops to encamp at Monroeville Heights to protect American citizens living there against Mexican cavalry raiders led by Brigadier General Antonio López de Santa Anna. On July 4th (the day after America gained independence), while camped at Monroeville Heights with his troops, Polk heard news that Santa Anna had attacked Mexico City and captured much treasure including artillery pieces and cannons. Polk ordered his men to return to their tents and not fight; however this action set off an uproar among Americans who saw it as another example of Mexico's disregard for American neutrality which they felt had been violated previously by Spain when she aided Mexico against France in 1804-1808
Pottsville was founded in 1724 by Captain John Potts. In 1781, the town was burned by the British during the Battle of Saratoga. It was rebuilt and became a major American settlement after Confederation. Pottsville is home to Pennsylvania State University and has been called the "City of Brotherly Love."
