The first mills in Pottstown were built by German immigrants early in the 19th century to process wood for fuel and building materials. By 1853, over 100 mills had been established in Pottstown and its environs. In 1916, local farmers formed the Borough of Pottstown to manage development within their boundaries; this led to increased commercial activity and more residents moving into the borough over time. In 1951, the Township of Pottstown was created out of portions of both Boroughs; it remains one of only two townships in Bucks County with a full-time Township Manager position today (the other being Ardsley). Development has continued throughout recent decades with new housing developments popping up all around downtown while major retail areas have expanded northward along I-81/I-95/US 40 (including an enclosed mall) and eastward along US 22nd Street (to include a large shopping center now known as Northfield Commons).
