In 1836, Pottstown, Pennsylvania was founded by John Dickinson and Simon Cameron. The town was originally called "Allentown" and it was renamed "Pottstown" in honor of the Marquis de Lafayette. It is one of the oldest continuously inhabited places in America. The first settler in Pottstown, John Dickinson, arrived in 1793. In 1836, Pottstown became an incorporated town under a new name for its proximity to Philadelphia. The early settlers were farmers who grew oats and corn on their land and raised cattle. They built churches and schools in Pottstown as well as homes for themselves and their families. By 1850, the population had increased to over 1,000 people. Pottstown is a small town in Lackawanna County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 2,879 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Scranton-Wilkes-Barre metropolitan area. The first settlers in what is now Pottstown were white Presbyterian missionaries from Scotland who arrived in 1785. They named their new settlement after Bishop John Pott (1681-1753), an Englishman who had been missionary to North America and founded the Anglican church in Philadelphia. The town began to grow rapidly due to its location on the Susquehanna River and its access to transportation including a ferry that connected it with Wilkes-Barre and Scranton. In 1812, Pottstown became one of three townships within Wilkes-Barre Township when that township was created from parts of four other townships: Lackawanna, Westmoreland, Rosslyn Heights and Whitehall Township. At the time, Wilkes-Barre was one of the largest cities in Pennsylvania and had considerable influence over local affairs. In 1814, following the Mexican War, Pottstown became part of Texas Territory as part of that state's effort to gain control over Mexico's possessions on American soil. During World War II, Pottstown played an important role as a military airfield located near Wright–Patterson Air Force Base which supported American military operations during the war outside North America. After hostilities ended in 1945, many veterans returned home and started businesses such as restaurant and motel ownership which continues today. In 1951, when Lackawanna County was established, Pottstown became one of its two townships; it remained an independent municipality until 1974 when it merged with neighboring Westmoreland Township into that county's larger entity under then−Gov.[1] According to Theopolis Census Index for 2000,[2] there were 3,953 residents living in households out of which 54% were married couples living together †; 33% female householders with no husband present†; 25% male householders with no wife present†; 5% unmarried individuals‡; 4% widows or widowers† (of age 50 or older); 1% people without any form of income†; 1% people 65 years or older*. On July 4, 1776, the Marquis de Lafayette arrived in Pottstown, Pennsylvania, to lead the American Revolution. The town was renamed Philadelphia on September 3 of that year in honor of Lafayette.
