Pottstown is a small city in Lehigh County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 11,545 at the 2010 census. It is the seat of Lehigh County and home to the Pottstown Mall. The city was founded in 1782 by John Thomson and others as part of a drive to create a strategic location for goods located near Philadelphia. It became an incorporated town in 1814. Pottstown is named after General James Braddock, who died during the Battle of Yorktown in 1781. The name "Pottstown" may be derived from Potts Township which was organized as early as 1782 and lay within what are nowheastern Montgomery County on the Susquehanna River valley between Scranton and Wilkes-Barre. Colonel Caleb Potter (1724-1801), one of British forces that fought at Saratoga Springs against George Washington's Continental army under Nathanael Greene, purchased 547 acres (2 km²) along current Route 6 from Nicholas Cosby with intentions of developing it into a townsite named for him – Pottersville – but this idea failed to gain support among local residents because there was no water available on or near Cosby's land grant. In 1814, Thomson submitted a proposal to become an incorporated town due to his belief that it would provide better opportunities for marketing his new products than being solely dependent upon shipments coming down the Delaware River via boat or wading through rapids on the Schuylkill River. On December 12, 1814, incorporation papers were filed with Lehigh County; by February 1st of the following year alledged problems with taxes and questionable business practices had been resolved and incorporation had proceeded without further incident. In 1828 Thomson sold most of his land holdings including Pottersville to purchase 640 acres (2 km²) east of present-day Pottstown where he built what is now known as Pottstown Mall – one of three shopping complexes remaining on modern-day Philadelphia’s North Side after streetcar service ended in 1925). In 1893 Pottstown erected its first public building: One block north of Market Square (now South Street), then known as "The old Public School", later renamed “Petticoat Hall” after Senator William Hogg (R–Lehigh Valley), who helped bring about passage of laws providing free school education for all children within 100 miles (160 km). That same year also saw construction begin on what is now known as Second Street Jail; this brick structure served until 1985 when it closed due to vandalism and neglect. On July 4th, 1938 President Franklin D Roosevelt delivered a speech at Point State Park located just outside town limits before traveling on horseback across nearby Elkton Creek Bridge over Elkton Creek into Lehigh County for a campaign rally at Easton Civic Center prior to visiting Bethlehem Steel Works where hesigned Executive Order 9blooded Sons steel furnace plant open day marking National Recovery Administration's first major success story westward… A few years later when World War II began heavy industry relocated out east especially towards Pittsburgh while pottery production continued largely unchanged only marginally shifted production eastward resulting in some abandoned kilns still standing today adjacent Toeplitz Road along Witham Creek… By 1945 much older factories such as those along Ironton Avenue south side had closed leaving behind large empty lots which have since become housing estates." - From "History Of The City Of POTTSTOWN" by Edwin L Phillips
